    Announcements are probably the easiest way to maintain regular effective contact in online courses. Unless students change their notification preferences, announcements are sent to student email accounts. The MJC Academic Senate guidelines suggest one announcement a week at minimum would satisfy the REC requirement. It’s a good idea also to add the announcements to your homepage (Google “Canvas Add Announcements to Homepage” to see how).

    Surveys are an excellent way to collaborate with students and get their input. Reaching out to them this way can help them feel connected to the instructor and the course content. Often, we see instructors using the announcement tool to survey students, either through Canvas Survey, Survey Monkey, Poll Everywhere, or even simply by having students reply to the announcement itself.

    Traditionally, participating in discussions has represented the “gold standard” for regular effective contact. One model is to post on the third, seventh, and twenty-first students’ posts. This lets students know you’re there but doesn’t stifle their conversation. It also doesn’t take too much time. More recently though, faculty have noted that participation in discussions may hinder students’ willingness to engage, a little like the way a group becomes silent in a classroom when the instructor walks by to listen. The debate about this continues.

    Email (in Canvas, these are called “Messages”) is an obvious form of regular effective contact. The problem though is that evaluators and accreditors can’t see it (well, accreditors can see it but only if they take extra ordinary measures, something they’re unlikely to do). Email works best for individual contact, such as when a student falls behind and needs encouragement to catch up. For notifications that go to the whole class, announcements work better because—unless students change their notification preferences—a copy of every announcement is also sent to the students’ email accounts. Announcements also stay neatly organized in Canvas where students (and accreditors and evaluators) can easily see them.

    Most of our contact with students happens through rich feedback on assignments. Accreditors can see feedback in the gradebook. However, evaluators cannot. Evaluators see the course more-or-less as students, and students can’t access the gradebook. Access may change in the future as other options are explored.
